- To calculate the gallons of water in a circular pool or round hot tub, start by finding the radius with this formula:
Radius = Diameter ÷ 2 - Then, find the volume in cubic feet:
Volume (ft) = 3.14 ✕ Radius2 ✕ Average Depth (shallow end + deep end) - Finally, convert cubic feet to gallons. Since one cubic foot equals 7.84 gallons:
Gallons = Volume (ft) ✕ 7.48
Calculating gallons for rectangular pools
The formula used to calculate the gallons of pool water in a square or rectangular spa is a little more straightforward. Simply find the volume in cubic feet and multiply the answer by 7.48:
Volume (gal) = Length ✕ Width ✕ Average Depth ✕ 7.48
Calculating freeform, irregular, or kidney-shaped pools

Not as accurate for freeform or irregular-shaped pools
Any basic volume calculation will provide an estimate of the actual water in your pool, but these figures can be off by thousands of gallons in large freeform or lagoon-style oases.
