How do you calculate gallons in a pool?

Calculating gallons for circular pools

  1. To calculate the gallons of water in a circular pool or round hot tub, start by finding the radius with this formula: Radius = Diameter ÷ 2
  2. Then, find the volume in cubic feet: Volume (ft) = 3.14 ✕ Radius2 ✕ Average Depth (shallow end + deep end)
  3. Finally, convert cubic feet to gallons. Since one cubic foot equals 7.84 gallons: Gallons = Volume (ft) ✕ 7.48

Calculating gallons for rectangular pools

The formula used to calculate the gallons of pool water in a square or rectangular spa is a little more straightforward. Simply find the volume in cubic feet and multiply the answer by 7.48: Volume (gal) = Length ✕ Width ✕ Average Depth ✕ 7.48

Calculating freeform, irregular, or kidney-shaped pools

Here’s where things get tricky. Unlike a basic rectangle composed of four straight lines, custom freeform pools may feature irregular curves, making it hard to measure precise dimensions. However, it’s possible to calculate an approximate volume. Take a measurement of the longest length and the widest width of your pool to calculate the surface area (length ✕ width), then insert these figures into the formula above to determine the estimated volume. Drawbacks to basic pool gallon calculation

The formulas above can help you calculate theoretical volume, but they won’t capture the exact number of gallons in your pool. Here’s why: 

Not as accurate for freeform or irregular-shaped pools

Any basic volume calculation will provide an estimate of the actual water in your pool, but these figures can be off by thousands of gallons in large freeform or lagoon-style oases. This is particularly concerning when using these measurements to determine chemical concentrations. If your volumetric measurement is too high, chemicals can’t effectively clean the water. Too low, and you could put swimmers at risk and waste pounds of chemicals with each treatment. 

Doesn’t account for variable depths

When you calculate the gallons of water using basic pool measurements, you can’t adjust these dimensions for gradual slopes, built-in benches, and sun shelves. 

Doesn’t account for internal features

Stairs, ledges, swim-outs, fountains, and spa spillovers all displace a certain amount of water, which these basic calculations can’t account for. 

Water levels can fluctuate

The water level in your pool will vary with rainfall, evaporation, and epic cannonball splashes. Consider measuring the difference between the wall height and the water’s surface for a slightly more accurate depth reading. 

Small measurement errors make a big difference

Alternatives to basic calculation for pool gallons

Pools come in all shapes and sizes, so there’s no one-size-fits-all solution for calculating the gallons of water each one holds. Here are a few options to help you find a more accurate volume: 

Apps and software calculators 

There are many online calculators and mobile apps designed to help you calculate the gallons of water in your pool. Some allow you to factor in internal features and even draw the dimensions of your freeform pool to glean more accurate results. Of course, these programs still rely on accurate measurements, so it’s important to verify the dimensions. 

Chemical-based calculation

If you’re not a math person, you might appreciate a scientific approach to volumetric measurements. Start by testing your water chemistry and taking note of the free chlorine reading at baseline. Then, add a precise amount of chlorine to your pool and allow it to fully mix before taking a second measurement.  Since one pound of chlorine should raise free chlorine by two ppm in a 10,000-gallon pool, you can compare your readings to determine your pool’s volume. 

Measuring water meter usage

When filling a new or fully-drained pool, your water meter can provide extremely accurate measurements. Simply record a meter reading before and after filling your pool, and subtract the difference. Remember that showers, baths, sprinklers, washing machines, and dishwashers will all affect your reading, so be sure you’re not using water anywhere else while your pool fills. 

Section-by-section measurement
